Counting The Costs
Luke 14:25-28, Matthew 10:37-39

Everything that we do in our daily lives has a cost connected with it. It does not matter what we do, getting up and getting ready for work or school, not getting out of bed in the morning, buying a new car, new home, food, clothes. Everything has some kind of cost involved. The same with deciding to serve Jesus or not. There is a cost involved.

Luke 14:25 And there went great multitudes with him: and he turned, and said unto them,

Luke 14:26 If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.

We need to understand what Jesus is talking about here when He uses to word "hate not". Jesus is trying to tell His disciples and us today that we need to be more focused on Him (Jesus) than on our own family. Notice Jesus says here "hate not", that is a negative and the opposite is love, so what is being meant by this verse is that if you love your father, mother, brother, or sister more than Jesus you can not be His disciple. The reason is that you are putting people in a higher importance in your life than you are putting Jesus.

Luke 14:27 And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.

We have to learn to die to self everyday and let Jesus control everything we do. The "die to self" does not mean that you really die each and every day. What it means is that you sacrifice (give up) what you want to do and do what God wants you to do for Him.

Luke 14:28 For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient (plenty or enough) to finish it?

We need to understand what is going to happen when we decide to follow Jesus and obey Him fully. There is a cost in following Jesus. There is also a cost in not accepting and following Jesus.

Matthew 16:26 For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

Matthew 10:37 He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.

Jesus is saying the exact same here as we found in Luke 14:26.

10:38 And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me.

10:39 He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake (because of me) shall find it.

We need to stop trying to live our lives by ourself and ask Jesus to help us in our everyday life.

John15:18 If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you.

We can know for sure that the world hates us not because of ourself, but because we follow Jesus.

Do you sometime feel that the world does not care about you? Do you sometimes feel lonely? Do not worry about what the world thinks about you, but instead remember the words of 1 Peter 5:7 Casting all your care (burdens or worries) upon him; for he careth for you. God really cares for each of you and wants the best for each of you. Only way to get the very best out of life is to fully trust God.
