Growing Spiritually
Part 1 - 1 Peter 2:2

We just finished learning what we must do to say we are a good Christian, now we are going to learn how we can grow spiritually. Growing spiritually means to mature in our Christian life. There are many things that we need to be able to grow in our relationship with God. In the next few weeks we will be finding out about 4 of those things we need to grow spiritually.

The first thing we all need is the scriptures, that is, God's word. We find this in I Peter 2:2 As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:

When we are born in our physical bodies, we need milk to help us grow, the same is true when we first accept Jesus. We need to begin the learning process so that we may grow spiritually. We need to be reading the Bible everyday, this is God's way to talk to us. We also need to pray everyday, this is our way to talk with God.

Just as babies grow, we as Christians need to grow in our spiritual lives. 2 Peter 3:18 But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen. For us to grow we need to be in God's word every day.

In 2 Timothy 2:15 we find: Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. We can not study God's word without reading God's word.

Then in 1 Thess. 5:17 we find: Pray without ceasing.

We are to never stop praying. I know I have said this before, but we need to be reminded again and again. The only way for us to communicate with God is through prayer. There are many verses that talk about prayer, and Jesus himself thought prayer was very important that he taught his disciples how to pray. We are to pray about everything we do in our daily lives. We are also to pray for one another.

James 5:16 Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

Part 2 - John 14:26

The second thing we need to grow spiritually is not a thing, but a person. That is the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is part of the trinity. The trinity is God the Father, God the Son (Jesus), and God the Holy Spirit. Luke 3:21-22. We are going to focus on the Holy Spirit and how the Holy Spirit helps us to grow in our spiritual lives.

John 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

We find here 4 things about the Holy Spirit.

  1. Another name is the Comforter or Holy Ghost -- both of these and Holy Spirit mean the same thing.
  2. The Holy Spirit is sent by God the Father.
  3. The Holy Spirit teaches us all things
  4. The Holy Spirit reminds us of the things Jesus said.

As we read the Bible, it is the job of the Holy Spirit to help us understand what we are reading.

Part 3

We have already learned that for us to grow spiritually we need the scriptures (God's Word), and we need the Holy Spirit. This morning we will find something else we need to grow spiritually and that is teachers.

The same as when we went to school we needed teachers to help us learn, we need good, faithful Christian teachers to teach us God's word so we can grow in our spiritual life.

II Timothy 2:2 And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.

Paul is telling Timothy that the things Timothy has heard from Paul needs to be told to faithful men, so that they can teach others about Christ.

We are to listen to and learn from mature Christians.

In Matthew 28 Jesus commands us to go and teach.

Matthew 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

Matthew 28:20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen

Part 4

Remember the first thing you need to grow spiritually is God's word. Remember we compared that to a new born baby needing milk to grow. I Peter 2:2 The second thing you need is not a thing, but a person. That person is the Holy Spirit. Remember it is the job of the Holy Spirit to teach us all things and remind us what Jesus taught while he was here on earth. John 14:26. The third thing again is not a thing, but again a person. We need teachers. When we was going to school we had teachers to teach us what we needed to learn, the same with our Christian life, we need mature Christian teachers to teach us about God's word. II Timothy 2:2. The final thing is Disciples or learners. That is each of you. You need to be willing to learn God's word.

Matthew 4:18-22

Matthew 4:18 And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers.

Matthew 4:19 And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.

Matthew 4:20 And they straightway left their nets, and followed him.

Matthew 4:21 And going on from thence, he saw other two brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in a ship with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and he called them.

Matthew 4: 22 And they immediately left the ship and their father, and followed him.

Notice in verses 20 and 22 the four men made their choice and decided to follow Jesus and learn from him. They were willing and did not think about what other people said or did.

Each and every one of you have a choice to make. That choice is to be willing to be taught God's word or not. No one can force you to be a disciple, you must make that choice for yourselves. If you are willing to be taught and learn God's word, then you will grow in your Christian life. Remember another way to learn is by studying. II Timothy 2:15 15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

You have to make an effort to study God's word everyday and come together and be taught. Heb. 10:25 Not forsaking (forgetting) the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting (encouraging) one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

The Bible give several examples of people being taught by others:

  1. Jesus teaching the 12 disciples
  2. Paul teaching Timothy and Titus
  3. Elijah teaching Elisha

II Corinthians 8:12 says For if there be first a willing mind, it is accepted according to that a man hath, and not according to that he hath not.

We must have a willing mind in order to learn God's word.

Do you have a willing mind to learn more about God and follow Him?
